When temperatures start to rise, there’s no better way to cool you down than a refreshing glass of iced tea.
In this article, we’re going to take you through how to make iced tea and suggest some delicious flavours to tantalize your tastebuds!
Why Iced Tea?
Let’s start with why it’s a great idea to make and drink iced tea.
Firstly, it’s a healthier alternative to soft drinks that are loaded with sugar. When you make iced tea yourself from scratch, you know exactly what goes into it and what you’re putting into your body.
And even if your iced tea recipe calls for sugar, you can replace it with a natural sweetener like honey or date or maple syrup.
Iced tea is also hydrating. As it’s made up of mainly water, you are choosing the best way to replenish and refresh your body, avoiding the dehydrating effects of other choices such as coffee or sugar-loaded drinks. In essence, when loaded with ice, it’s the perfect summer drink!
Overall, it’s a healthy choice. Tea is packed with compounds called flavonoids — antioxidants that protect cells from damage and disease. You can use also use tea blends that include other health-promoting ingredients like acai berries, spearmint and raspberry leaf, which all come with proven benefits.
Basic Iced Tea Recipe
Making iced tea is really easy. We’re going to look at two basic methods of making iced tea here: hot brew and cold brew — choose the one that works best for you.
This is the quickest method for making iced tea, perfect when you have a sudden craving for this delicious drink!
- Brew your tea using 2 tea bags per cup of hot water and steep the tea for 3-5 minutes.
- Remove the tea bags, then add the same amount of cold water and serve immediately over ice… it couldn’t be easier!
With this method, the flavours are extracted more gently from the tea, and the end result will be a less bitter, more delicate taste.
- Using a ratio of 1 tea bag per cup of water, fill a pitcher with room temperature or cold water and the required number of tea bags.
- Leave in the refrigerator overnight or for 8-12 hours. Then remove the tea bags and serve with ice.
You can also add lemons slices and sprigs of fresh mint or other herbs for the finishing touches to your tea, brewed by either method.
